Everyone arrived on Monday afternoon just in time for a light lunch and the first training session in Alicante. The weather was great and the pitch was freshly watered before our arrival. As everyone was pretty tired from the travel, the first training was focused on technique and to allow the players to get to know each other.
Day 2 – Training & Selection match
On Tuesday morning followed the first morning training session where players did lots of passing exercises and plays in small spaces. Lunch and a short meeting in the hotel were followed by an afternoon training session were all the focus was on a match up between the players. Staff made a selection of two teams and we’ve witnessed a dynamic game of football where everyone tried to do their best and impress the coaches.
Day 3 – Match against UD Alicante
After evaluating the work done the day before and acknowledging the travel the staff decided we skip the Wednesday morning training so everyone can focus on the match in the afternoon. Players received their instructions at the tactical meeting after lunch and everything was ready for our Fieldoo XI to make their first impression.
Árni Rúnar Örvarsson: “The facilities were excellent, the staff were fantastic and I was very happy with how good they were in analysing trainings and matches and I especially liked the feedback we got on the meeting before the second match.”
We arrived in Alicante in late afternoon to play against the local team UD Alicante. Game was to be played on the artificial turf so the players prepared accordingly. Fieldoo XI started in 4-4-2 diamond formation and soon began to dominate the match. The first and only goal came after some clever play from our keeper which was followed by a nice run and a quality cross from the left hand side by Nikita Lukin for Juan Manuel Perez who finished with a superb diving header. The hosts soon threatened through a counter but our keeper Elvis Džafić showed tremendous reflexes to stop a close header. Both teams made quite a few changes after half time and Fieldoo XI changed their formation to 3-5-2. The focus was on keeping the score and the players responded magnificently as they restricted the opposition to long shots and set pieces where our second keeper Ondrej Čap showed his composure and stopped all the efforts convincingly. The game ended with the score from the first half and everyone left the stadium smiling. Spirits were high and dinner was followed by a meeting where the organizing agent offered his feedback and informed the players about an extra match on Thursday evening where only the best individuals from the week will participate.
Day 4 – Training & Match against CD Benidorm
Thursday started with a morning training where all the players were raring to go and show the staff they deserve a spot in the afternoon match. The session was followed by some individual work and players left for lunch to the hotel. Everyone was able to get some rest before going to the meeting where staff informed everyone who was traveling to Benidorm for the evening game. 20 players were chosen and everyone gathered at a light dinner before boarding a bus to Benidorm. We arrived at the stadium named by the former Barcelona star Guillermo Amor an hour and a half before kick off so everyone had enough time to prepare.
Fieldoo XI started brightly, this time in a 4-3-3 formation, but the hosts were the ones to take the lead through a rebound after a great save by Elvis Džafić from a close header. Fieldoo XI responded with some quick counters but we went in to the break one goal behind. A few changes were made and Fieldoo XI started to press more to try and equalize but the hosts showed their quality as they kept possession and threatened through quick passing plays. Fieldoo XI threatened trough swift counter attacks and our forward Kelsey Waller as a few centimeters short after an accurate long ball by Agron Bekirovski and again after a skillfull run and through ball from the 19-year old Lukin. The result stayed unchanged till full time and hosts were able to capitalize on their possession play. Despite the loss coaching staff left the stadium pleased as Fieldoo XI players showed great atittude and worked hard against strong opposition.
With this match the formal part of the Fieldoo Trial was concluded and the players were allowed to have a relaxing evening in the city as they were scheduled to leave home the next day.
