Spanish La Liga football club Valencia C.F., currently without main sponsor, puts its Twitter account (@valenciacf) to the “shirt sponsor” place on the game against Barcelona on September 21st and becomes the first top class football club in Europe who directly promotes its social networks.

Club’s decision to promote its Twitter account is clearly saying social networks are no longer just nowadays fashionable communication tools also for top sport entities and/or individuals, but rather mainstream channel of enormous potential.

The results of ambitious concept are clearly measurable: during the match against FC Barcelona (2:2), Valencia gets around 100 new Twitter followers per minute, while #amuntvalencia becomes world-wide trending topic.

Probably Valencia wouldn’t use the most valuable advertising space for Twitter if there was a shirt sponsor, but nevertheless it’s fascinating that promotes social network and not other services, such as official webpage etc. It’s definitely historical moment for social networks in European football. Let’s see who is going to be next!?
